Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnately trifoliate or unifoliate). Alternate. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules small, distinct, caducous.

Flowers: Flowers in clusters on a short, axillary axis, racemose or solitary, rarely in terminal panicles, bracts small, persistent, subtending 2 flowers. Flowers papilionaceous; bracteoles at base of calyx, often persistent. Calyx lobes 5, acute, the upper 2 sometimes shortly connate. Corolla variously colored, occasionally absent, keel petals straight. Stamens 10; upper stamen distinct, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior; style 1, apical.

Fruit: Pods compressed–ellipsoid to compressed–orbicular; indehiscent; often with reticulate ridges. Seeds 1 per fruit; reniform.
